How do I start doing research for my paper?

Answer

When beginning research for a paper, it is helpful to start with our reference databases for brainstorming a topic, finding background or overview information, and identifying keywords on that topic. These databases contain short overview articles to introduce you to popular paper topics. Here are a few databases to get you started:

  • Opposing Viewpoints - this database is great for controverial topics. Click on the Browse Issue link near to the top for a list of topic ideas.
  • Gale ebooks - this is a database of encyclopedias on a range of subject areas
  • Encyclopedia Britannica - reputable encyclopdia providing credible and objective overviews on a variety of topics

To access any of these databases, you will need to login with your Canvas/Self-Service login. Once you have identified a topic of interest, use the article's headers and keywords to help you determine a focus and supporting points for your research paper. Let the research guide you in your decision making process.
